Another Premie Infant Dies From Baby Formula Flesh-Eating Disease (NEC)

Manufacturers of infant formula are fraudulently promoting their infant formula as just as safe as mother's milk for the nutritional needs of premature babies

Friday, January 7, 2022 - A wrongful death lawsuit filed recently alleges that "Abbott Laboratories, Inc., the makers of Similac Special Care, and Mead Johnson & Company, the makers of Enfamil Human Milk Fortifier and Enfacare Powder," mislead all concerned parties including the parents of a premature baby that died from NEC baby formula as a result of being fed the deadly baby formula. Abbot Laboratories and Meade Johnson, two makers of infant formula fed to most premature babies, designed marketing literature and trained their sales force to convince pediatricians, hospitals, pediatric nurses, and thus parents that their premature baby infant formula is nutritionally equal or superior to a mother's breast milk. Mothers of premature babies have been told that their breast milk is insufficient to feed low birth weight babies, sometimes weighing in at less than three or four pounds. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Study after study proves that a mother's breastmilk is perfectly formulated to feed a premature baby, being naturally premature itself. Unnatural, synthesized infant formulas like Enfamil and Similac contain chemicals that eat away at the delicate intestinal lining and can lead to serious infection and death.

Parents of premature babies are intimidated by the underweight condition of their baby and the surroundings of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where their baby is placed. Premature infant formulas take advantage of this insecurity and aim to "fatten up" the baby since a fat baby is a healthy baby in their words. Abbot describes Similac Special Care as: "A 24 Cal/fl oz iron-fortified feeding for growing, low-birth-weight infants and premature infants." The product also makes inferences to the nutritional excellence of a mother's breastmilk by saying, "OptiGro is our exclusive blend of DHA, lutein, and vitamin E: these important ingredients are found in breast milk." Parents of sick premature babies naturally defer the feeding responsibility to the doctors and hospitals, trusting in their judgment when in fact many premature infants do not have a digestive system that can assimilate the chemically modified cow's milk infant formula. Many premature babies have developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and require major surgery, or died. NEC is a type of flesh-eating disease that affects premature babies causing their intestines to become ulcerated and allowing bacteria to invade their digestive system. Babies with NEC are then fed intravenous antibiotics to try and halt the infection. If the condition is not checked the intestine must be surgically cut away. Lawsuits by parents of babies that have suffered from and some who have died from being fed Enfamil and Similac premature infant formula have filed NEC formula lawsuits seeking to hold the companies responsible for their negligence and receive lump-sum monetary compensation. As a result of reports of premature babies developing NEC after being fed their infant formulas, Abbot Nutrtition.com now admit the shortcomings of their premature baby infant formula and warn doctors and parents, "Very-low-birthweight infants are particularly susceptible to gastrointestinal complications; therefore, feeding should be initiated cautiously."
