Mothers Of Premie Babies Should Pump And Store Breast Milk, Avoiding The Need For Artificial Infant Formula
Infant formula is a complex mixture of oils, chemicals, and preservatives that promote babies getting fat and may be detrimental to their health
Thursday, January 13, 2022 - Parents of babies that are born prematurely should take note and advise doctors not to supplement the mother's natural breast milk with cow's milk substitutes or baby infant formula. Doctors and pediatric nurses often think that a fat baby is a healthy baby and try to accelerate the baby's weight gain by adding chemically synthesized, inorganic cow's milk formula as a substitute for the mother's natural solution. Parents should advise their baby's nurses that they do not want them fed infant formula, particularly Similac Special Care which is the subject of a NEC baby formula wrongful death lawsuit involving a premature infant filed last week. "A mother indicates in a recently filed lawsuit that Similac Special Care caused her infant son to die due to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), alleging that manufacturers of the cow's milk-based formula should be held responsible for failing to warn parents and the health care community about the risks their products may pose for premature babies," according to AboutLawsuits.com (AL).
According to AL, Shannon Hall, the mother of Eli Grey Hall, an infant born prematurely, was doing fine in the hospital's intensive care unit until doctors and nurses decided to try and accelerate the baby's weight gain by feeding him Similac Special Care infant formula that is supposedly specially formulated for a premature baby. The mother had pumped and stored her breastmilk to facilitate feeding the baby while in the intensive care unit, and the baby was also fed donor breast milk when needed. Similac Special Care 30 calorie formula was added to the natural mother's milk formula, leading to the baby developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) a deadly intestinal flesh-eating disease. The baby died after being unable to recover from NEC surgery to remove part of the baby's necrotized intestines. The lawsuit against Abbot Labs alleges that the company failed to warn the parents of the possibility that the baby could develop NEC. The company should have been aware of this fact since studies have linked feeding premature babies cow's milk infant formula with developing the deadly disease.
Study after study indicates that a high percentage of prematurely-born babies that are fed cow's milk synthetic infant formula wind up developing NEC. Infant formula manufacturers like Abbot Laboratories and Meade, the maker of Enfamil, have a responsibility to monitor the science that underlies the safety of their baby feeding products and respond to adverse events as they occur. A 2018 study concluded that babies fed infant formula are twice as likely to suffer from NEC as those fed with human breast milk that has been pumped and stored. The American Academy of Pediatrics has gone on record as stating that "human breast milk was the safe and preferred method for providing nutrition to preterm infants as a result of the risk of baby formula NEC." NEC formula lawyers work with the parents of prematurely born babies that have developed NEC or have died from the condition.
