Diarrhea Could Signal A Serious Digestive System Problem For Prematurely Born Infants

Premature babies and others that have been given Enfamil and Similac infant formula could develope NEC, a serious health threat

Tuesday, December 21, 2021 - There is no greater fraud than when a baby formula manufacturer claims that their infant formula is equal or superior to a mother's breastmilk. Nature always gets it right, and a mother's milk provides nutrition in the perfect concentration to match a premature child's special needs. There is no substitute for a mother's breast milk. Even though doctors and nurses have taken the easy way out and say that synthetic, genetic, and chemically altered cow's milk is good for a child, the legal community and the free market take objection. Abbott Labs is being sued by multiple plaintiffs for causing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature babies fed Enfamil and Similac cow's milk infant formula. NEC formula lawsuits are on the rise. According to LawStreetMedia, "The plaintiff's infant daughter was fed Similac, a cow's milk-based product, and developed necrotizing enterocolitis, a condition which causes inflammation and death of intestinal tissue. This condition can cause perforation and secondary abdominal infections. The plaintiff accuses Abbott Laboratories of falsely marketing their product as being as safe as breast milk, which the plaintiff says does not cause enterocolitis." Parents of babies that were born prematurely should watch for the early signs that their child may have developed the deadly cow's milk baby formula intestinal disease. One of the earliest signs of NEC to watch for is diarrhea.

Diarrhea is loose, watery stools that happen when there is an imbalance somewhere in the digestive tract. Diarrhea happens when the body directs too much water to the lower intestines, the bowels, and the colon resulting in dehydration elsewhere. The longer diarrhea persists, the greater the dehydration can be. Parents should continue to give a baby plenty of fluids despite diarrhea to keep their system hydrated. Babies with diarrhea may appear sleepier than usual and have decreased bladder output according to Medical News Today (MNT). If the baby also has a fever, a lack of energy, vomiting green bile, is irritable, has blood in their diarrhea, and has difficulty putting on weight, the baby could have NEC. Parents of prematurely born infants that were fed Enfamil or Similac and have any of the symptoms listed above should immediately contact their pediatrician. The baby could be given antibiotics if an intestinal infection is suspected. If your premature baby was given cow's milk baby formula they may have developed NEC and bacteria is re-entering the stomach through an ulcerated opening from the abdominal cavity. NEC formula lawyers can help you to file a claim against the manufacturers of the infant formula for failing to warn you of the potential NEC side effects when used for premature babies. The best treatment for diarrhea is to switch from cow's milk, or baby formula made from dehydrated cow's milk, to mother's breast milk. MNT writes, "Research has suggested that exclusively breastfed babies have diarrhea less frequently than even partially formula-fed ones. One study of 150 infants, published in the Journal of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons, found that around 27% of breastfed babies experienced frequent bouts of diarrhea, compared with almost 72% of those who were formula-fed."
